I
really wasn't planning on getting this car as soon as I did. So I'm
not sure what exactly I want to do with it. But I know what
direction I want to go. I want a simple cruiser that is
comfortable and has lots of pep. With gas constantly going up,
I like to get at least 18 mpg. I like to have something my
girl and I can hop in and drive to Bowling Green Kentucky or the
coast. Two
things for sure is vintage air and a 5 speed transmission. But
I probably won't be doing any of these until this dude gets paid
for. I hate owing money for a money pit. At least this
money pit won't be loosing value, I hope... Until
that time, I'll be doing a few smaller things here and there. Wish
List... Power
Plant The
current engine is kind of a nostalgic. It has a gear drive and
a nice lope. I know nothing about carburetors, I'm so use to
stand alone fuel injection. Although I could get use to the
simplicity of a carburetor. I
really don't have any plans on changing the engine. I thought
about fuel injection, but I kind of wouldn't mind learning about
carburetors. Transmission The
three speed automatic never has been a favorite of mine. I've
been wanting manual every since my first truck. I've swapped
it to a four speed, it may not have the extra gear for highway
cruising, but at least I can bang them till I get there. On
the plus side, it should make swapping over to a TKO-600 a lot
easier in the future. Lord knows I need the practice shifting
gears... Rear
End I
really wasn't planning on changing the rear end. But as I was
cruising down the road, my axle bearing went out. Typically
this an easy fix, slap in a new axle and bearing and hit the road.
When I tore the 10 bolt apart, I saw that I was dealing with a
8.2. Not really a reliable behind an automatic much less a
manual transmission. On top of the 8.2, it has a damn
mini spool. I really don't want to stick much money into such
a weak rear end. Most
chevy guys have some fascination about 12 bolts differentials.
From what I've read, it's a 50/50 shot that they leak out the pinion
straight from Moser or Strange. I'll probably just build a
Ford 9". Until then I'll deal with the temporary fix with
a new axle and bearing. |
